Baby girl born with ‘shirt’ at Aprilia hospital

An event of exceptional rarity and charm took place at the Città di Aprilia Hospital: at the beginning of the year, Aurora was born. She is the first baby of 2026 at the facility, born via an “en caul” birth—meaning she was delivered while still completely enclosed inside the intact amniotic sac. This is an extremely rare biological phenomenon, estimated to occur in approximately one out of every 80,000 births, where the newborn emerges protected by the membrane that sheltered them throughout the pregnancy.

Aurora, born via spontaneous delivery weighing 3,320 grams, recorded an Apgar score of 10/10, confirming her excellent health. Beyond the medical fascination, the event carries strong symbolic value: in folk tradition, being born “with a shirt” (nascere con la camicia) has always been a sign of a lucky and protected life.
“Birth with an intact sac is an exceptional event that requires great experience from the medical team,” explains Simonetta Picone, head of Neonatology. “Clinically, it involves no risks, but witnessing such a marvel is always a profound emotion that rewards the high standard of care at our facility.” The success of the delivery was guaranteed by the synergistic work of gynecologists, midwives, and neonatologists, confirming the Città di Aprilia Hospital as a center of excellence in the maternal-infant sector.
