Until 20 December, men aged 45 to 75 can have a free PSA test added to a blood test they are already having for other reasons. A free urological consultation is also available if needed.
Launched on 26 October, the prostate health awareness campaign promoted by Regina Apostolorum Hospital in Albano Laziale and Città di Aprilia Hospital will run until 20 December. Both hospitals are part of Lifenet Healthcare. Supported by the Municipality of Albano Laziale, the initiative aims to raise awareness of the importance of prostate health checks and make simple, free tests more accessible to men.
The campaign is open to men aged 45 to 75, who can have a PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) test added free of charge to a blood test already scheduled for other reasons, by contacting the hospital’s booking service. A short questionnaire about urinary symptoms is also offered at the time of the blood test. If the results or answers suggest that further assessment may be needed, the hospital will contact the patient, with their consent, to arrange a free urological consultation and assess whether any additional tests are required.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in Italy and may cause no symptoms in its early stages. This makes it important not to neglect prostate health and to discuss with a doctor whether regular checks are appropriate, even in the absence of symptoms.
“An elevated PSA level does not necessarily mean a cancer diagnosis,” explains Professor Roberto Giulianelli, Head of Urology at Regina Apostolorum and Città di Aprilia hospitals. “It can also be caused by benign conditions, such as inflammation or an enlarged prostate. The result must therefore be interpreted in the context of the individual’s medical history and, where necessary, followed up with a specialist assessment.”
The campaign is the result of collaboration between healthcare providers and the local community, with the aim of making preventive care more accessible and encouraging men to pay greater attention to their health. The initiative has the patronage of the Provinces of Rome and Latina and is supported by LILT Rome, FIMMG Lazio and Rome, SIICP, AVIS Provincial Committee of Rome and Cittadinanzattiva Lazio.
Blood tests are available Monday to Saturday, from 7:30 am to 10:30 am, at Regina Apostolorum Hospital, 50 Via San Francesco d’Assisi, Albano Laziale, and Città di Aprilia Hospital, 25 Via delle Palme, Aprilia. The final day to take part will be Saturday, 19 December.
