To raise public awareness about the importance of prevention and to encourage early diagnosis, the Regina Apostolorum Hospital in Albano Laziale, in collaboration with the City of Aprilia, promoted a day of free glaucoma screenings open to the citizens of the Lazio region.
The Open Day dedicated to eye health took place on March 7, with the hospital opening its doors to the public. The ophthalmology team performed free check-ups without the need for an appointment or medical prescription, on a first-come, first-served basis.
Glaucoma is confirmed to be a particularly insidious pathology, causing progressive damage to the optic nerve that only becomes perceptible when vision loss is already at an advanced stage.
Walter Calcatelli, Director of the Inter-company Ophthalmology Service, emphasized the importance of regular check-ups, explaining that one should not wait for symptoms to appear, as prevention remains the only truly effective tool to protect eyesight, especially after the age of 40.
The initiative was part of a broader local prevention program. General Director Gabriele Coppa highlighted how identifying the disease early has improved patients’ quality of life and reduced the social and healthcare impact of the pathology.
