At Erba Hospital, a surgical procedure of exceptional complexity

At the Erba Hospital, a team led by Dr. Tiziano Villa performed an exceptionally complex orthopedic surgery, restoring the ability to walk to a 48-year-old woman from Bergamo who was suffering from severe joint and spinal deformities. The patient had unstable valgus knees, necrosis of the right femoral head, and a severe kyphoscoliosis—conditions that made any prosthetic procedure extremely risky.

To tackle the case, the surgeons relied on advanced digital planning techniques: high-definition CT scans and 3D simulation made it possible to anticipate the joint geometries and potential intraoperative challenges.

The strategy adopted led to an outstanding result: an almost complete correction of the deformities through prosthetic replacement of both knees and the right hip, without the need for additional procedures. Postoperative recovery was rapid and positive, with a marked improvement in alignment and walking ability.

Although follow-up is still short, the initial outcomes confirm the excellence of the Erba orthopedic team. “This was surgery at the limits of the extreme,” Dr. Villa commented, “made possible by the synergy between advanced planning tools and surgical expertise.”
